ith La Niña weather phenomenon in full swing and tropical cyclones detected in the wider region, Jakarta is on high alert again for the possibility of heavy downpours causing floods throughout the city.

For too long the densely populated capital has been the site of regular flooding, with the great deluge of 2020 still fresh in the minds of its residents.

As spells of bad weather pick up in the country and around Southeast Asia, city administrators are bracing for another year-end full of disaster-mitigation efforts.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) previously issued an early weather warning that Greater Jakarta could potentially face a spell of torrential rain with thunder and strong winds and up to 40 millimeters of precipitation between Dec. 20 and Dec. 22.

According to online dashboard pantaubanjir.jakarta.go.id, some 23 neighborhood units (RT) across the capital were inundated from 9 p.m. on Monday after heavy rains struck parts of the city, with water levels receding in all but three neighborhoods by midday on Tuesday.

South Jakarta was among the hardest hit on Monday, with flooding on Jl. Kemang Raya, Jl. Bangka and Jl. Mampang Prapatan blocking traffic and forcing two-wheeled vehicles onto the newly renovated sidewalks to avoid getting submerged, according to local reports.
