esponding to a barrage of negative press coverage on the unrest in Wadas village, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo said he was not concerned that the controversy would dent his ratings in the polls.

Ganjar also said, during a discussion with the media on Thursday night, he took full responsibility for the fallout from the violence that "may have occurred" during the survey for a dam project in Wadas village, Purworejo regency, in the southern part of Central Java.

"I don't focus on 2024 [presidential election], I just want the project to be completed. I may not have full control over how this project will be completed but since this is in Central Java, I take full responsibility for it," Ganjar said.

A police operation aimed at securing a survey to make way for an andesite mine as part of the construction of a dam in Wadas had led to the arrest of dozens of residents and has cast a negative spotlight on Ganjar.

Locals, who for the past four years have protested the plan, had made efforts to meet with Ganjar but until the outbreak of violence last week, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician had declined to give an audience.

Wadas villagers have also claimed that there had been no systematic effort from Ganjar's administration to communicate the impact of the mine on their local environment.
