ndonesia is preparing the evacuation of its citizens from Ukraine overland through Poland and Romania, Foreign Ministry officials have said, as Russia’s attacks on the Eastern European state intensify.
Foreign Ministry citizen protection director Judha Nugraha said on Saturday the ministry had formed a team and prepared aircraft to evacuate Indonesians stranded in Ukraine from neighboring Poland and Romania as flights have been banned from Ukrainian airspace.
The relocation of Indonesian citizens to Poland and Romania “will be carried out as soon as possible” as Indonesia’s authorities continue monitoring developments on the ground.
"We will move when there is a safe route for our citizens to Poland and Romania,” Judha told a press briefing.
As of Saturday, there were 153 Indonesians, mostly migrant workers who work in the manufacturing and hospitality sectors, registered at Indonesia’s embassy in Ukraine.
Judha said that 82 of them had arrived in the embassy in Kyiv, while 25 in Odesa and three in Lviv were staying in safe houses prepared by the embassy.
Meanwhile, 14 Indonesian nationals in the battle zone — nine in Chernihiv and four in Kharkiv — are remaining in their homes as relocation is no longer possible due to the developing situation in those areas.
