he North Sumatra Police are looking into possible human trafficking violations in the alleged fatal caging of people in the house of graft suspect and inactive Langkat regent Terbit Rencana Perangin-Angin.
Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Hadi Wahyudi said they were investigating one case of human trafficking and two cases of violent death of the caged victims.
“There are multiple crime articles violated in these cases. We will give a detailed explanation when we name the suspects,” Hadi told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
The police, he said, were consulting with a human trafficking crime expert from the Indonesian Ombudsman.
The cages were discovered not long after the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrested the then-Langkat regent in mid-January for allegedly demanding kickbacks from private contractors in exchange for infrastructure projects.
The KPK and North Sumatra police found two iron-barred cages at Terbit’s house that held dozens of people and began a separate investigation into the matter.
