President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has, once again, attended a rally hosted by his supporter group and told them to be patient ahead of the 2024 presidential election -- making it the second time in the past few weeks that he took part in such an event in his second and final term in office.
The rally at Ancol Ecovention Hall in North Jakarta on Saturday was held by a supporter group known as Team 7, which consists of a number of smaller groups backing Jokowi during his reelection campaign in 2019.
In his speech, Jokowi said that he missed meeting with his supporters, particularly because his plans to hold gatherings not long after he was reelected as President were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jokowi also told his loyalists not to rush into throwing their support behind any prospective presidential candidates for the 2024 race just yet, particularly since the government was still focusing on addressing more pressing issues such as the economic recovery from the pandemic and inflating commodity prices.
This mirrored what happened during a rally hosted by another Jokowi supporter group, Projo, in Central Java in late May that was also attended by his fellow Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician and popular Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, who has topped yet another electability poll.
“I'd say [you] should not hasten [endorsing a candidate as] we [all] have to work hard to fix the problems at hand first. There’s no need to be rash,” Jokowi said at the Team 7 rally over the weekend, as quoted by Kompas.id.
