A PDI-P executive has said that its central board chair and House Speaker, Puan Maharani, will embark on a series of cross-party talks after the party's Independence Day celebrations.
ouse of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani, from of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) faction, plans to embark on a “political safari” after Independence Day on Aug. 17 with the help of a “special team”, a senior party official has said.
Puan is also the daughter of PDI-P matriarch Megawati Soekarnoputri and is being touted as a potential presidential nominee for 2024, while the PDI-P is the largest faction in the ruling coalition and counts President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo among its members.
Bambang Wuryanto, a PDI-P executive in charge of election campaigns, said the special team would assist Puan during talks with the leaders of other political parties, including establishing which subjects were not open to discussing.
"The do's and don'ts must be clear. One must know what can and cannot be discussed when she meets” the leaders of other parties, said Bambang who is also a loyal supporter of Puan.
According to Bambang, the special team is also to help Puan arrange a suitable schedule for the series of talks after the ruling party’s Indonesian Independence Day celebrations on Aug. 17.
“The timing matters. When we talk about people like [the President], there are calculations. A good time for me is not necessarily a good time for you. So it is necessary to have an advanced team that arranges the [schedule],” he said, adding that the team would work quickly to arrange the talks.
Bambang added that Puan’s most trusted colleagues would be part of the special team, but stopped short of providing any names.
