T

he Indonesian International Islamic University (UIII) began its new 2022-2023 academic year on Monday by welcoming 200 students, including foreign grantees of the university's scholarship program, who will join full offline classes.

In his speech to inaugurate the new academic year, UIII rector Komaruddin Hidayat said that the offline classes would allow greater space for collaboration and participation by students and professors after one year of a mix of physical meetings and online activities.

"During the past year, there have been some major and influential academic activities: outside the classroom, almost every department held conferences, seminars, webinars and workshops on a regular basis […] with world-class speakers, discussing important global issues in their respective fields. These are very important and make us proud," Komaruddin said in his convocation speech.

For the new academic year, UIII has accepted 148 new students, for both MA and PhD programs, who are all on scholarship from the university. One third of the new students are foreign citizens, from countries like India, Pakistan, Armenia and Timor Leste.

Komaruddin said that the presence of foreign students in the UIII campus should be seen as Indonesia's contribution to the global Islamic discourse.

"If we talk about Islamic civilization, for example, then our country can contribute to the Wasatiyah model of Islam, which has become the tradition and practice of the Muslim community in the archipelago for centuries. Yet, because Islamic civilization is cosmopolitan, we also need to be open to contributions from other Muslim countries," Komaruddin said.
