2024 election will be clouded by uncertainty: Jokowi

"Be very careful. The 2024 general election will be organized while the global economic situation is clouded by uncertainty. We need to have the same concern about it," Jokowi said in a speech delivered for the national gathering of poll workers organized by the General Election Commission (KPU).

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo warned on Friday that the general election, scheduled for February 2024, could take place under the cloud of global economic and political uncertainty from the Ukraine war effect and the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Be very careful. The 2024 general election will be organized while the global economic situation is clouded by uncertainty. We need to have the same concern about it," Jokowi said in a speech delivered for the national gathering of poll workers organized by the General Election Commission (KPU).

Jokowi said that the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and other geopolitical tensions had created food, energy and financial crises in so many parts of the world.

"The current position today is not normal -- this is abnormal," President Jokowi said, quoted by Kompas.com.

The President said that given the possible economic problems, he called on KPU to make the best use of the election funds earmarked from the state budget.

"Once again, the 2024 election will be conducted while the global economy is clouded by gloom, uncertainty and difficulty, while we're all working to recover the economy," Jokowi said.

In April, President Jokowi said that the general elections will be held as scheduled on Feb. 14, 2024, quashing rumors that his government is trying to delay the polls and extend his term beyond the constitutional limit.

The KPU however has raised its concern about the lack of funds for organizing a series of preparation stages of the 2024 presidential and legislative elections this year, saying the government support has been “not optimal”.
