ome Minister Tito Karnavian has extended the lowest level of the country’s four-tiered COVID-19 public activity restrictions (PPKM) nationwide until Jan. 9.
Policymakers predict that public movement will increase in the coming weeks amid the Christmas and New Year season
“The extension is the government’s preparation so that public activities at houses of worship and other public facilities can go well and not become infection hotspots,” the ministry’s director for regional administration, Safrizal, said in a statement quoted by Antara.
Public venues are allowed to operate at full capacity, but operators have been asked to ensure that all attendees check in using national health surveillance application PeduliLindungi.
The government has asked the public to continue to adhere to health protocols, particularly wearing face masks in public spaces.
Policymakers have kept the current pandemic curbs in place amid a global and national increase in cases of the Omicron XBB subvariant of COVID-19.
Nationwide new daily cases reached a local peak of nearly 8,500 on Nov. 16, with 54 deaths the same day. The figures have been declining since.
