rosecutors from the Attorney General's Office (AGO) have lodged motions with the Jakarta High Court in opposition to appeals by murder convict and former police general Ferdy Sambo and three of his accomplices against a lower court’s rulings in their cases.
The prosecutors lodged the notice of counter-appeal on Friday, likely to prevent Ferdy, his wife Putri Candrawathi, his driver Kuat Ma’ruf and another aide-de-camp Brig. Ricky Rizal from winning lesser sentences for their roles in the murder of Ferdy’s former aide-de-camp Brig. Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat.
"This is to ensure that the prosecutors do not lose their right to appeal," AGO spokesman Ketut Sumedana said.
He declined to reveal the details of the motion and noted that the prosecutors were still preparing their arguments.
Ferdy, Putri, Kuat and Ricky recently appealed against the South Jakarta District Court’s rulings in their four separate trials last week.
Judges sentenced Ferdy to death for premeditated murder and tampering with evidence to orchestrate a cover-up and Putri to 20 years in prison for aiding in the murder plot, while Kuat and Ricky got 15 and 13 years, respectively, for serving as accomplices in the murder.
Their sentences far exceeded the life imprisonment demanded by prosecutors for Ferdy and the eight years in prison each sought for Putri, Kuat and Ricky.
