ndonesia voted on Thursday in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution demanding that Russia “immediately” withdraw its troops from Ukraine, marking the one-year anniversary of a war felt around the world.

However, Jakarta’s representatives in New York also voiced concern that the motion adopted with strong backing from member states had missed the mark on the “spirit of realizing peace”, lacking any calls for both conflicting parties to pursue peaceful dialogue.

The 11-paragraph UNGA resolution reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting any Russian claims to the parts of the country it occupies.

It also demanded “that the Russian Federation immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders”, and called “for a cessation of hostilities.”

Some 141 countries voted in favor of the resolution, while seven opposed and 32, including China and India, abstained.

Explaining Indonesia’s vote, Indonesian Permanent Representative to the UN Arrmanatha Nasir said the world was “no closer to peace” since the beginning of the war and that the impacts of the war had gone beyond the borders of both Ukraine and Russia.

“Indonesia voted in favor of the resolution because we believe in upholding the principles of the UN Charter and international law, including peaceful resolution of disputes, respect for human rights and the rule of law are fundamental to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine,” Arrmanatha said on Thursday, as broadcast by UNTV.
