he Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD Jakarta) reported dozens of neighborhoods in the capital had been flooded on Monday morning, as authorities warn more heavy rain is possible in the coming days.
Acting BPBD Jakarta head Isnawa Adji said a total of 48 neighborhood units (RT) had been flooded as of 9 a.m. on Monday. The floodwater depths range from 15 centimeters to over one meter in a few neighborhoods in East Jakarta.
“The [Jakarta] BPBD found the number of RTs in Jakarta that were flooded has grown from 24 on early Monday morning to 48 RTs currently. This accounts for 0.158 percent of the total [number] of RTs in Jakarta," Isnawa said on Monday, as quoted by kompas.com. He added one stretch of road had also been flooded.
Of the 48 flooded neighborhood units, 28 are located in East Jakarta, 18 are located in West Jakarta and two in South Jakarta.
East Jakarta has so far been the region hardest-hit because heavy rain caused the Ciliwung River, one of the most polluted rivers in the city and thought to be one of the main reasons for Jakarta’s constant flooding, to overflow.
When asked by reporters, acting Jakarta Governor Heru Budi Hartono said his administration was working to address the problem.
“As long as the [water] can flow, [the flood should recede]. We will continue to make efforts so [the flood] recedes as soon as possible," Heru said, as quoted by tribunnews.com.
