"As an election winner that was trusted by voters twice, of course we will nominate our own candidate," Hasto said.
he Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has balked at a proposal that Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto should run for president with Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo as his running mate.
PDI-P secretary general Hasto Kristiyanto said on Monday that party matriarch Megawati Soekarnoputri had instructed the PDI-P to nominate a presidential candidate from its own ranks, and dismissed the possibility of the party supporting Prabowo for the position in 2024.
"The offer for a coalition in nominating a presidential candidate should come from the PDI-P," Hasto said, as quoted by Kompas.
In a meandering speech in January, Megawati announced that the PDI-P would nominate one of its own members for the 2024 presidency and that she would personally announce the decision at a political rally in June.
Hasto appealed to the PDI-P’s successes in the past two elections to defend the members-only policy.
"As an election winner that was trusted by voters twice, of course we will nominate our own candidate," Hasto said.
On Sunday, Gerindra advisory board deputy chair Hasjim Djojohadikusumo, who is also the younger brother of Prabowo, said that given Prabowo's age and experience, it was only natural that the Gerindra chairman should be at the top of the ticket and that Ganjar should be his running mate.
