ational Police chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo has appointed the head of the Corruption Eradication Commission's (KPK) enforcement division, Insp. Gen. Karyoto, as the Jakarta Police chief, replacing Insp. Gen. Fadil Imran.
Karyoto's appointment, announced in an internal police cable on Monday, was part of a major reshuffle initiated by Listyo involving the replacement of seven provincial police chiefs from West Java to Central Sulawesi.
KPK chair Firli Bahuri, a former police general himself, applauded the decision, saying it was consistent with the antigraft body's plans to improve its employee's career paths.
"This promotion is consistent with the KPK's spirit of developing careers in the institution and also contributing to the nation," Firli said in a statement.
During his time at the KPK, Karyoto handled some major corruption cases involving senior government officials, including former fisheries and maritime affairs minister Edhy Prabowo, former social affairs minister Juliari Batubara and former South Sumatra governor Nurdin Abdullah.
The last major graft case that Karyoto handled targeted suspended Papua Governor Lukas Enembe.
Listyo’s reshuffle of the National Police follows a scandal involving former internal affairs chief Insp. Gen. Ferdy Sambo, who has been sentenced to death for his role in orchestrating the murder of his aide, Brig. Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat.
