Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto has opened up the possibility of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) joining the grand coalition in anticipation of the 2024 general elections.
Prabowo said earlier this week he would soon meet with PDI-P senior politician Puan Maharani, daughter of the party's chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri, to further discuss the issue.
"In my opinion, this [possibility] is always open, if there's interest," Prabowo told reporters on Monday at his private residence in South Jakarta.
Prabowo said the proposal for holding the talks came from Puan when the two joined the 77th anniversary of the Indonesian Air Force over the weekend.
"She told me there probably needs to be an arrangement for a political communication," Prabowo was quoted as saying by Tempo.co.
Earlier this month, Prabowo declared that five major political parties, which currently back President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's administration, could join forces to nominate a unified presidential ticket in the 2024 general elections.
