Indonesia Decides

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on Sunday again warned his supporters to vote for the right candidate in the 2024 presidential election, as the next president would be pivotal to deciding the country's direction in the long run.

Speaking during an event billed as Musyawarah Rakyat (Musra), or people's discussion, at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in Central Jakarta, Jokowi said the next president should be able to guide the nation as it transitioned into a developed nation by taking advantage of the demographic dividend.

"This is our one chance in history. [If] we make a mistake in electing our leader, our chance to become a developed nation in the next 13 years will be gone. So be very careful," Jokowi said in a fiery speech.

The President, whose second and final term ends in October 2024 and is constitutionally barred from running for a third term, also presented a number of key criteria for his successor.

"The individual must understand the people, understand their needs and be willing to work hard for the people. He must be bold," said Jokowi.

A demographic dividend occurs when declining mortality and fertility rates leads to a surge in the working age population, producing fewer dependents than in previous generations.

The proportion of working age people in Indonesia is expected to peak between 2025 and 2030, after which it will decline as the population ages.
