A national meeting of the Golkar Party over the weekend gave the authority to party chairman Airlangga Hartarto to pick the party's presidential ticket for the 2024 election.

Leaders of regional and provincial branches of the Golkar Party have also given Airlangga the mandate to pick coalition partners for the presidential election.

"For the presidential election, the party has given the mandate to me to pick presidential and vice-presidential candidates, as well as the coalition partners," Airlangga was quoted by Antara as saying.

More than 450 Golkar Party politicians gathered for a national meeting in Jakarta over the weekend to come up with strategies as the party prepares for the 2024 general elections.

The meeting also agreed to maintain the open-list proportional system and that the party would draw up lists of legislative candidates based on their merits and dedication to the party.

Golkar is one of the founding members in the United Indonesia Coalition (KIB), which was set up to nominate a unified ticket for the 2024 presidential election. The other two members are the National Awakening Party and the United Development Party (PPP).

The coalition is now facing the risk of splitting apart as its three members struggle to pick a presidential candidate and begin to explore divergent paths for next year's election.
