The PDI-P secretary-general says the party will be taking the next two months "to vet" potential candidates to run for vice president alongside its presidential nominee, Ganjar Pranowo.
Megawati Soekarnoputri, the chairwoman of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), will announce presidential nominee Ganjar Pranowo’s running mate in September, a party executive has said.
PDI-P secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto said the party had another two months to search carefully for the most suitable running mate for the Central Java governor.
“July [and] August will be the time to vet [potential candidates]. We’ll find the best arrangement while also looking at electoral aspects, so the joint leadership of Pak [Mr.] Ganjar and his running mate will be certain to have the greatest support from the people to win the election,” Hasto said in a statement on Tuesday.
Megawati would announce the party's vice presidential nominee in September after coordinating with President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, who is a fellow party member, and leaders of political party backing Ganjar in the upcoming presidential race.
Several political parties allied with the PDI-P have touted their own candidates for the vice presidential slot at the negotiation table. But analysts say the final decision still rests with Megawati, as the PDI-P is the only party to have fulfilled the presidential nomination threshold.

The United Development Party (PPP) has put forth as Ganjar’s running mate its newest member, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno, who joined the party in June, just two months after leaving Prabowo Subianto’s Gerindra Party.
