he Agrarian and Spatial Planning Ministry will turn the Air Force’s Soewondo base in Medan, North Sumatra, into a trade center.
Minister Hadi Tjahjanto said that the area, which has been serving as an Aviation Operations Safety Area (KKOP) is regarded as a hindrance to investment.
"We are withdrawing the KKOP status of Soewondo air base because it has become an obstacle to attracting investors," said Hadi, who is a former Indonesian Military (TNI) chief, in his speech at the handing over of asset certificates to the regional administrations in North Sumatra on Thursday.
Hadi said that, for the time being, the KKOP status had been moved to Kualanamu Airport in Deli Serdang regency, North Sumatra.
"The Soewondo air base area will later become a trade center in Sumatra. This decision was made to attract investors," said Hadi.
Hadi added that in the near future the area would be used for private profit and public non-profit schemes. (dre/gev)
