ll provincial chapters of the Golkar Party gathered in Bali over the weekend have rejected an initiative to hold an extraordinary party congress to replace incumbent party chairman Airlangga Hartarto.
Leaders of the provincial Golkar branches also continued to endorse Airlangga's chairmanship of the party and would campaign for the party to win the 2024 general election.
"An extraordinary party congress could be proposed by two-thirds of provincial party chapters but here we can make a statement that 100 percent of these chapters are against an extraordinary congress," interim chairman of Golkar Papua provincial chapter Ahmad Doli Kurnia Tanjung said, as quoted by Antara.
Leaders of 34 Golkar party provincial chapters held the meeting in Bali over the weekend to respond to a proposal from some senior party politicians who had called for an extraordinary congress.
Among these senior politicians were Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Pandjaitan and Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, who called for the removal of Airlangga in an extraordinary congress due to his failure to get a presidential or vice-presidential nomination to contest the 2024 presidential election.
Doli claimed that the weekend meeting in Bali was convened at the request of leaders of provincial party branches.
"We want to focus on winning all political agendas for 2024 together with Airlangga Hartarto," he said.
