Sibolga District Court in North Sumatra has acquitted Siska Telaumbanua of stabbing her then boyfriend in February.

Presiding judge Grace Martha Situmorang rejected on Wednesday the demand for three years and six months in prison submitted by prosecutors against the 28-year-old defendant.

Judge Grace said that while the court found that the defendant had indeed committed the act, it was in self-defense and not a crime.

According to the indictment the incident took place on the evening of Feb. 25 at the Sambas Baru Hotel in Sibolga, where the defendant and her then boyfriend Otomasi Gulo, 28, had dinner together.

Later in their hotel room, the man asked the defendant to have sex, but she refused, which made him angry. He then threatened to spread a video of them having sex that he had previously recorded and also threatened her with a knife.

However, the defendant put up a fight and managed to take the knife from him, and then stabbed him in his genitals.

The man was then taken by ambulance to the Metta Medika Hospital Sibolga with the help of the hotel staff and at Siska’s request.

The incident was reported to the police, which led to Siska's arrest. Otomasi has recovered from his injuries. (dre/gev)
