The United Development Party (PPP) appears unfazed by the fact that its two former electoral allies, the Golkar Party and National Mandate Party (PAN), now support Prabowo Subianto, a potential rival to Ganjar Pranowo in the 2024 presidential election.
Senior PPP politician Muhammad Romahurmuziy recently said that the Golkar and PAN decision to back Prabowo had all but confirmed that the 2024 presidential election will be a three-horse race between Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Ganjar, Gerindra Party patron Prabowo and opposition figurehead Anies Baswedan.
The pro-government PPP supports Ganjar and the ruling PDI-P. Meanwhile Prabowo’s camp was enlarged on Sunday after two other pro-government parties Golkar and PAN joined fellow pro-government Gerindra and National Awakening Party (PKB) in backing Prabowo for president, making the four way alliance the biggest yet heading into next year’s election. Anies is backed by the NasDem Party, the Democratic Party and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).
“[With Golkar and PAN supporting Prabowo], the public will have more options, since [next year’s presidential election] will likely see three presidential candidates, Ganjar, Prabowo and Anies,” Romahurmuziy told reporters on Sunday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

Golkar, PAN and the PPP were previously grouped under the United Indonesia Coalition (KIB), the first electoral alliance to be formed ahead of next year’s election. But the KIB had struggled to settle on a single presidential pairing since its inception, which ultimately led to the PPP switching its allegiance and backing Ganjar.
While the PPP had made attempts to lure their former partners to back Ganjar in the past, the decision of Golkar and PAN to instead back Ganjar’s rival still remains beneficial for the PPP, Romahurmuziy said. This is because the PPP is now facing less resistance to its member Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno being named running mate for Ganjar.
