Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Budiman Sudjatmiko, a former pro-democracy activist who opposed the New Order regime, has declared his support for Prabowo Subianto, in hopes that the ruling party will partner with the rival of its presidential candidate, Ganjar Pranowo.
Breaking away from the party line, Budiman publicly declared on Friday his support for Prabowo, establishing a group of supporters for the Gerindra Party chairman, called Prabowo-Budiman United (Prabu), in Semarang, Central Java. The group will work across the province to help Prabowo win the February election.
In his speech during Friday’s event, Budiman acknowledged that he and Prabowo used to be at odds with each other, but Budiman said he is now inspired by the retired general’s ideas, claiming these views are similar to what Budiman champions.
"In the past we were forced to be on opposite sides,” Budiman said. “But after 25 years, I was inspired [by him] after reading a book [he wrote] entitled Indonesian Paradox. [His] spirit is the same as what my colleagues and I embodied while fighting for the sovereignty of the people.”
Budiman said if Prabowo wins the election, he expects him to advance public welfare by developing village-owned enterprise (BUMDes) cooperatives, increase social security and improve education by developing science and technology.
Prabowo, who attended the event along with some Gerindra elites, expressed his appreciation for the former student activist, saying Budiman’s support is a boost to his third presidential bid.
Prabowo told Budiman that: “With you joining me, I feel very, very strengthened. I feel that I have received new energy.”
