The potential vice-presidential candidacy of Gibran Rakabuming Raka of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) may trigger an “open conflict” between his father President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and party matron Megawati Soekarnoputri.
The potential vice-presidential candidacy of Gibran Rakabuming Raka of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) may trigger an “open conflict” between his father President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and party matron Megawati Soekarnoputri.
Tensions have been running high this week as the Constitutional Court is set to deliver a major decision on Monday over petitions seeking to lower the minimum age of presidential and vice-presidential candidates, a case that could potentially clear the way for Gibran to enter February’s presidential race.
Calls for Gibran, the 36-year-old mayor of Surakarta, to pair as running mate with Gerindra Party chair Prabowo Subianto, who is the main rival of PDI-P presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo, have intensified over the course of this week, particularly from loyalists of both Prabowo and Jokowi.
A growing number of Gerindra’s regional branches across the country have announced their support for the Prabowo-Gibran pairing this week. They said the country needed a younger generation to participate in leading the country.
Joining the bandwagon are some of Jokowi’s supporter groups, with the latest being the Samawi group, which threw its support behind the Prabowo-Gibran pairing at Prabowo’s private residence in Kertanegara, South Jakarta, last week.
While Gibran himself has not announced any intention to run, parties of the electoral alliance backing Prabowo’s presidential candidacy have named Gibran as one of the strongest potential candidates to run alongside Prabowo. They claimed the idea came from the public.
“This is the will of the people. We are not talking about the will of the elites. There is support from the people; you can hear it everywhere,” Prabowo said on Wednesday.
