The planned meeting comes amid speculations that the PSI will join Prabowo's electoral alliance for the 2024 presidential election.
Indonesia Solidarity Party (PSI) chairman Kaesang Pangarep is set to meet with Gerindra Party counterpart Prabowo Subianto amid speculation that the former’s party will officially endorse the latter’s presidential bid.
“Insya Allah [God Willing] I will meet with [Prabowo],” Kaesang said on Tuesday in response to reporters’ inquiries. “We are a new party, just established in 2014. We need to have friendly relations with big parties.”
The meeting would come after Kaesang, the youngest son of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, and his entourage of PSI executives, met with Puan Maharani, senior politician of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).
Kaesang took over the party’s top post just two days after joining the PSI, a small party claiming to represent the youth. He has then been embarking on an intense political tour, meeting with leaders of various parties and other prominent figures.
Kaesang is the first member of Jokowi’s family to break tradition by not joining the PDI-P, which has supported his father since his political career began in 2005 with the mayoral race in Surakarta, Central Java.
His older brother, current Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and his brother-in-law, Medan mayor Bobby Nasution, are also card-carrying PDI-P members. Gibran’s name has been mentioned as a potential vice-presidential candidate in opinion polls since February.
