Syahrul was slated to come to the KPK for questioning on Friday after failing to appear for a summons on Wednesday, citing family issues.
Investigators nabbed him after receiving information that Syahrul had arrived in Jakarta on Wednesday around midnight, KPK spokesperson Ali Fikri said.
“We’re concerned that he would run away or destroy evidence, so we decided to arrest him,” Ali told the press on Thursday evening.
One of Syahrul’s lawyers, Febri Diansyah, a former KPK spokesperson, said his client was committed to cooperating during the ongoing legal proceedings and would come to the questioning on Friday.
“I ensure that Pak Syahrul won’t run away,” Febri said. “We have committed to cooperating.” If the former minister was really cooperating, Ali said, he should have come right away to the antigraft body’s headquarters on Thursday.
