The daughter of former president Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid joins senior PDI-P politician Puan Maharani as a campaign advisor for the party's presidential candidate, Ganjar Pranowo.
The campaign team of presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has appointed senior Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) figure Yenny Wahid to its advisory council.
Ganjar campaign team chairman Arsjad Rasjid told a press briefing late last week that Yenny, the daughter of the late former president Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid, would be joining senior PDI-P politician Puan Maharani as advisor.
"So Mbak [Ms.] Yenny will join the [...] national team and sit alongside Mbak Puan on the advisory council," Arsjad said, as quoted by Antara.
Arsjad said Yenny was added to the was to bolster Ganjar’s image as a candidate promoting national unity.
Yenny earlier endorsed the candidate pair of Ganjar and his running mate Mahfud MD for the 2024 election, saying that she had a close relationship with both politicians.
"Because of that affinity, the feeling of closeness, we supporters of Gus Dur announce our support for the Ganjar-Mahfud ticket," she said, as quoted by Antara.
Yenny has a long-standing political battle with Muhaimin Iskandar, the chairman of the NU-backed National Awakening Party (PKB) who is contesting next year's race as the running mate of presidential candidate Anies Baswedan, an independent.
