lights to and from Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung, West Java, have diverted to Kertajati Airport in Majalengka, also in West Java, starting Oct. 29 due to safety concerns, according to Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi.

The length of Husein Sastranegara Airport’s runway is 2,000 meters, while Kertajati Airport’s runway is 3,000 m. The longer runway can accommodate the landing of wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 777.

According to Budi, the runway length, topography and the increasing population surrounding the Bandung airport were factors leading to the diversion. “Husein has a safety problem,” said the minister.

Both domestic and international flights have been diverted, including those operated by airlines Citilink, AirAsia and Super Air Jet. “International flights from Asia, Europe and other countries can [continue to] land directly in West Java. That is why we are moving to Kertajati Airport.” Budi said.

Kertajati Airport is the second biggest airport in Indonesia after Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Banten. The airport is expected to accommodate 4,680 passengers for both departures and arrivals every day with a seat capacity of 32,760 passengers per week.

The airport will serve 16 flights per day. Domestic routes serviced by the airport are to Balikpapan, Banjarmasin, Batam, Denpasar, Makassar, Medan and Palembang.
