Medan Mayor Bobby Nasution has been given a choice by the PDI-P to either toe the party line in the upcoming elections or leave in support of his brother-in-law’s bid for the vice presidency on a rival ticket.
Medan Mayor Bobby Nasution appears to be leaving the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) to decide whether he should be booted from the party for offering support to his brother-in-law Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who is running on a rival election ticket.
The son-in-law of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo made a high-profile appearance on Wednesday at an event in Jakarta declaring support of Gibran’s candidate pairing with Prabowo Subianto, the presidential nominee backed by a big-tent alliance led by the Gerindra Party.
While he refused to comment on his PDI-P membership status, Bobby delivered a gushing speech on behalf of young entrepreneurs from the North Sumatran city to declare support for the Prabowo-Gibran pairing.
“Pak Prabowo, present today are businesspeople from the regions, who are also warriors pledging support for [you] and Mas Gibran,” Bobby said, as witnessed by Prabowo.
“In the words of us Medan natives, ‘everything should go according to plan, Pak.”
Bobby’s speech comes just days after he was summoned to the party headquarters in Central Jakarta to clarify his statement that he would align with his supporters who are backing Gibran and Prabowo to run for high office.
