The Golkar Party has issued letters stating that the party supports President Jokowi's son-in-law as either its North Sumatra gubernatorial or Medan mayoral candidate.
The Golkar Party is eyeing to nominate Bobby Nasution, the current mayor of Medan, North Sumatra and President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s son-in-law, as a gubernatorial candidate in the provincial race next year.
Should the party decide to go ahead with the plan, the nomination would display the meteoric rise of yet another family member of President Jokowi, who is facing criticism for building a political dynasty at the end of his term.
Bobby told reporters on Wednesday that he had received a letter from Golkar stating that the party had chosen him to run in the gubernatorial election, slated for November next year.
Golkar’s North Sumatra branch confirmed the letter.
“Golkar has proposed for Bobby to run as the gubernatorial candidate in the North Sumatra Election. We also issued a letter [proposing his candidacy] in the Medan mayoral election,” said Golkar North Sumatra branch secretary Ilhamsyah on Wednesday.
Responding to the letters, Bobby said that he was “thankful” to the party, but assured that his priorities remained with seeing out his term as Medan mayor. Bobby’s term will expire next year.
“The gubernatorial election is still a long way away,” Bobby said on Wednesday. “I’m not focused on that yet.”
