he Jakarta provincial administration has allocated Rp 6.9 trillion (US$446.9 million) in the 2024 city budget to curb traffic congestion in the capital city by improving public transportation.
Jakarta Transportation Agency head Syafrin Liputo said most of the budget, or Rp 4.9 trillion, would be used for public service obligation (PSO).
“[The budget] is also for curbing illegal parking and traffic control [in Jakarta],” Syafrin said as quoted by kompas.com.
Syafrin said the city administration was focusing on improving the quality and quantity of public transportation in Jakarta to provide safety and convenience for the public.
“So, people can shift from private vehicles to public transportation,” he added.
The City Council had endorsed on Nov. 15 a bylaw draft on the 2024 regional budget worth Rp 81.71 trillion.
Deputy Speaker Khoirudin asked the city administration to use the budget to control the congestion in the capital city. This congestion management was set as one of the provincial administration’s priority programs in 2024.
