Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka campaign team member Anggawira has criticized presidential candidate Anies Baswedan for appointing “insiders” during his tenure as Jakarta governor.

Anggawira, who is a former spokesperson for Anies’ campaign in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election, said while the presidential candidate criticized the acute problem of insiders, or ordal, in the country’s bureaucracy during the first presidential debate, he, too had appointed those who were close to him when he was Jakarta governor.

“I see his criticism as a backlash, like he splashes water and his own face gets wet,” he said on Saturday.

Anggawira claimed Anies appointed his acquaintances to various positions in the Governor's Team for Accelerated Development (TGUPP) and Jakarta-owned enterprises (BUMD).

During the first presidential debate, in an attack on the controversial process that enabled President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s son Gibran Rakabuming Raka to run as Prabowo’s running mate, Anies said the problem of ordal had eroded ethics and the meritocratic system in the country.

The controversial Constitutional Court ruling that allowed Gibran to run in the presidential election was handed down when the court was led by Gibran’s uncle, Anwar Usman. The verdict was later found to be a gross ethical violation and saw Usman being dismissed from his position as court chief justice.

“When ordal occurs at the top, then the impact will be felt by everybody,” said Anies.

Sandiaga Uno, a member of the Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD campaign team, who was Anies’ running mate in the Jakarta election, rebuked Anggawira, saying that it was not appropriate to dig up the past just to attack people in the presidential election.

“We shouldn’t [raise past issues], we partnered and succeeded in winning the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election,” said Sandiaga after a campaign event on Sunday.

Sandiaga agreed with Anies’ statements during the first presidential debate that every party should commit to eradicating corruption.

“The TGUPP is ancient history, it’s already in the past. We should not talk about it, it’s a shame and disgrace to talk about. Let’s unite, especially since Pak Angga is our former spokesperson; we [need to] look forward not backward.”
