Vice president hopeful Gibran Rakabuming Raka said he would boost Banyuwangi's tourist sector performance in a dialogue event with local youths and small and medium enterprise (SME) owners in Banyuwangi, East Java, on Wednesday.

Gibran was accompanied by his spokespersons Arumi Bachsin and Emil Dardak, who is also incumbent East Java deputy governor, as well as national campaign team spokeswoman Isyana Bagoes Oka during the event.

"Something immediately evident about Banyuwangi is its tourism. There are so many new destinations here and we see the youth's involvement in tourism, SMEs and other activities; It’s outstanding," said Gibran, as quoted by detik.com.

Despite Banyuwangi being one of the most popular go-to destinations in East Java, many local tourist-related SME owners lamented the current obstacles in the tourist sector's development.

SME owners said some of the problems they faced related to promoting their services, providing connectivity and transportation access to visitors and procuring tour guide licenses.

As a solution to these issues, Gibran spoke about the development of creative hubs to accommodate the needs of tourist-related SMEs and boost local tourist sector development.

"While Ambon and other places we have visited before still do not have creative hubs, there is one here [Banyuwangi Creative Hub], and we must continue developing it so local SMEs and digital start-ups can progress further,” he said.
