The House of Representatives on Tuesday held a plenary session to wrap up its current sitting session and begin a recess period that would last through early March.
House Speaker Puan Maharani of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) faction led the plenary session on Tuesday together with deputy speakers Sufmi Dasco Ahmad of the Gerindra Party, Lodewijk F. Paulus of the Golkar Party and Rachmat Gobel of the NasDem Party.
Only 98 of 575 lawmakers were physically present for the plenary session, with 196 others having reported that they had taken a leave of absence.
Another 284 members failed to report to the House leadership the reasons for their absence.
"I believe that we have reached a quorum and in the name of God I can declare that the plenary session can start and is open to the public," Puan said in her opening speech to the session.
The current sitting session lasted for less than a month and lawmakers are expected to return to the capital on March 4.
