Presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo highlighted the importance of waste management during his visit to Waste4Change’s waste-recycling site in Bekasi, West Java, on Monday.
He conveyed his optimism that Indonesia had the potential to realize a circular economy that could eventually achieve zero waste.
"This is quite promising […] they have been doing this since 2015,” said Ganjar, as quoted by Antara news agency.
“They [Waste4Change] have been in operation since the landslides in Leuwigajah, and Bantar Gebang has also had an unresolved accumulation [of waste] for a long time. I challenged whether they could solve it, [and] they could."
Leuwigajah is a landfill area in Cimahi city, West Java, which serves the Greater Bandung area while Bantar Gebang is a landfill area in Bekasi city serving Jakarta.
Furthermore, Ganjar assessed that Waste4Change had successfully achieved a circular economy by processing plastic waste into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and transforming organic waste into animal feed, which in turn supports food security.
So far, Waste4Change can process approximately 60 tonnes of waste daily and boasts 200 institutions and 1,500 households as clients.
