The US, Indonesia strengthen cooperation in maritime security by opening a maritime training center in Batam to improve the skills of Bakamla personnel.
he United States and Indonesia have further strengthened their maritime security cooperation by opening a maritime training center to improve the skills of Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) personnel.
The US Embassy in Jakarta charge d’affaires Michael F. Kleine and Bakamla chief Vice Adm. Irvansyah opened the Anambas Maritime Training Center in Batam, Riau Islands on Jan. 29.
Klein said the maritime training center was an important achievement in US-Indonesia maritime cooperation.
“Four years since our initial groundbreaking, this new center will strengthen Indonesia’s maritime capabilities and enhance its role as a leader in countering domestic and transnational crimes,” Kleine said in a press release issued by Bakamla.
Meanwhile, Irvansyah said that in the ocean of friendship between both countries, the new training center was a historic marker.
“Together, we will provide not only training for sailors, but also strengthen friendships between both countries and ties that encourage maritime progress and security for a secure and prosperous future,” Irvansyah said in the statement.
The US State Department’s International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL) Bureau funded the construction of the training center, whose name is taken from the Anambas archipelago on the Natuna Sea, with a budget of US$1.5 million.
