PDI-P calls for audit of KPU vote-counting application

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has taken issue with the General Elections Commission’s (KPU) official digital vote-counting and tabulating platform, with the party calling for a forensic audit of the application amid accusations of election fraud that have plagued the 2024 general election.

The application, called the Tabulation Information System (Sirekap), has failed to fulfill its purpose as a tool to count votes, especially following the election organizer’s decision to suspend the vote tallying process at the district level, according to PDI-P executive official Bambang Wuryanto.

On Sunday, the KPU decided to suspend the use of Sirekap after district poll election committee (PPK) workers reported that the app had difficulties recognizing the handwritten numbers on the C1 manual tabulation form. The vote tallying resumed on Wednesday morning.

“The two-day suspension has opened up opportunities for fraud and violated the principles of legal certainty, effectiveness and accountability in organizing the elections,” Bambang said in a statement on Wednesday.

He added that the issues with Sirekap did not constitute a pressing reason to halt the vote tallying.

In the statement, the PDI-P stood by its position against the use of Sirekap, urging the country’s poll body to return strictly to manual means of tallying the votes from last week’s presidential election.
