T

he Indonesian Solidarity Party’s (PSI) hopes of entering the House of Representatives remain alive as the latest vote tally shows it gaining electoral ground, while the future of United Development Party (PPP) in the legislature looks shaky as it hovers near the cut-off for representation in the legislature.

The official election results will be announced on March 20, but preliminary data from the General Elections Commission’s (KPU) vote tabulation platform Sirekap shows the PSI gaining more than 230,000 votes in just three days.

With the bump, the PSI appears to have some 2.4 million votes so far, or 3.13 percent of all the votes tallied as of Sunday, an increase from the 2.86 percent the party had the previous week but still short of the threshold of 4 percent of the national vote to send representatives to the House.

As of Sunday afternoon, the results from 64 percent of the country’s 832,000 polling stations had been uploaded to Sirekap.

The PSI fielded candidates for the 2019 election but failed to secure any seats in the House. The self-styled youth party has been optimistic about getting into the legislature this time around, with chairman Kaesang Pangarep saying last month that the party’s internal surveys projected the party could have won between 5 and 6 percent of the vote.

However, given its weak showing in early vote counting, the PSI’s sudden burst of votes led to raised eyebrows on social media from those skeptical of the tally.

Senior PSI politician Grace Natalie maintained the vote surge was authentic, saying that there were still “over 70 million uncounted ballots”, most of which she claimed were from President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s supporter base, which would benefit the PSI, kompas.com reported.
