The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is currently assessing the smart defense concept in a bid to improve Indonesia’s current defense layout and the IKN’s defense infrastructure.
he National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is currently researching the smart defense concept and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve Indonesia's defense infrastructure in the Nusantara Capital City (IKN).
BRIN’s coordinator for defense and security policy Gerald Theodorus L. Toruan said the IKN requires a robust defense concept because of its upcoming role as Indonesia's latest governmental, defense and economic center.
"We see that there are China and the United States as pillars of power in the vicinity of the IKN. The IKN and other Southeast Asian regions have the potential to become buffer zones or even battlefields between superpowers," Theo said on Tuesday during a focus group discussion in Jakarta, as quoted by BRIN’s official website.
In its implementation, the smart defense concept combines military defense and non-military affairs to create a more thorough and robust national defense policy, he added.
Furthermore, Theo added, this concept must align with the IKN's smart city concept, which emphasizes efficient and inclusive use of IT technology breakthroughs.
Despite taking cues from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) smart defense concept to defend its member states, Theo said Indonesia's version leans more on using the Total People’s Defense and Security System (Sishankamrata) doctrine as its foundation.
Since the concept is still in the draft stage, BRIN emphasized the need to determine the concept's ideal implementation in the IKN and strategize the city’s smart defense-based defense infrastructure.
