State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir announced that his ministry would adopt a four-day work week allowing employees to have longer weekends, in an attempt to address mental health problems.
tate-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir unveiled a plan to allow ministry employees to take Fridays off, giving them three-day weekends if applicable.
Speaking at the 2024 SOE Corporate Communications and Sustainability Summit in Jakarta on Thursday, Erick said the ministry’s plan was made in a bid to address employees’ mental health problems.
"70 percent of the younger generation has mental health problems, that's why we encourage what we call the compressed working schedule," said Erick, as quoted by kumparan.com.
He said that to take Fridays off, employees must meet certain requirements including working a minimum number of hours.
Erick suggested that ministry employees who worked 40 hours or more a week would be eligible for this option.
However, he stressed that while applicable to the ministry’s employees, this policy would not necessarily apply to state-owned companies. He also clarified that the policy would not be granted every week.
"We’re pushing for this [policy], but it doesn't mean you [employees] can slack off. You won't have Friday off every week,” Erick said.
