President-elect Prabowo Subianto is reaching out to the political parties that backed his former rivals in an attempt to build a big-tent ruling coalition for a stable government following the announcement of the official 2024 presidential election result.

According to the General Elections Commission’s (KPU) final tally, Prabowo and his running mate Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who is the eldest son of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, won the presidential race after securing 96.2 million votes, or 58.6 percent of the valid national vote.

Their opponents, Anies Baswedan and Muhaimin Iskandar, and Ganjar Pranowo and Mahfud MD, trailed behind with 41 million and 27 million votes, respectively.

Following the victory announcement, the incumbent defense minister is seeking to build a ruling coalition comprising a large majority in the legislature to ensure a stable government, according to Ahmad Muzani, deputy chair of Prabowo’s campaign team.

“We’ll continue our efforts to form a large coalition with various political parties in Senayan,” he said on Wednesday, referring to the Senayan legislative complex in Jakarta. “Such communications are now underway.”

Muzani, who is also the secretary-general of Prabowo’s Gerindra Party, said talks had been proceeding “positively”, but stopped short of providing any details as to which parties Prabowo’s camp had reached out to.
