In exercising its right as the party that won the most votes in the 2024 legislative election, the PDI-P plans to renominate incumbent House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani as for a second five-year term.
he Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has confirmed its intention to renominate its central board chairwoman Puan Maharani as House of Representatives Speaker for a second term from 2024 to 2029.
PDI-P secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto affirmed the plan when he was asked about the revised fourth amendment to Law No. 17/2014 on legislative bodies, also known as the MD3 Law, which covers the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), the House and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD).
"Based on the process being undertaken, Puan will be the next House Speaker upon the directive of [PDI-P] chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri," he said on Sunday in Jakarta, as quoted by CNN Indonesia.
He said Puan had demonstrated competent leadership, both within the party and during her tenure as coordinating human development and culture minister in 2014-2019.
Continuing, Hasto said the selection process should still comply with the applicable law, under which the political party that won the greatest number of votes in the legislative election was entitled to choose the House Speaker.
The PDI-P won the most votes in the 2024 general election, according to the official tally.
"Regarding the position of House Speaker of course, if based on the MD3 Law, it highlights [that] as recognition and also by the electoral system of proportional representation, then the PDI-P gets the seat of House Speaker," Hasto said, as quoted by Kompas.com.
