The Islamic-based United Development Party (PPP) only won 3.9 percent of the national vote according to the final tabulation by the General Elections Commission (KPU), slightly short of the 4 percent threshold to qualify for seats at the House of Representatives.
The United Development Party’s (PPP) chances of getting into the House of Representatives have grown dimmer as the Constitutional Court has ruled against several of the party’s petitions challenging February’s legislative election results.
On Tuesday, the court started to announce its rulings on some of the petitions challenging the result of the legislative race, including those filed by the Islam-based party.
The PPP suffered a historic defeat in this year’s election as it only garnered 3.9 percent of the national vote, according to the final vote tabulation by the General Elections Commission (KPU). The vote was only slightly short of the 4 percent threshold to qualify for seats in the national legislature.
The court ruled against the PPP’s motions challenging the election results in 13 provinces on Tuesday, where the party claimed that its votes were unlawfully counted for rival Garuda Party.
Justices argued that the party failed to convincingly explain in great detail how and where the incorrect vote counting occurred, making the petitions unclear.
“The petitioner did not clearly state the location of the polling stations [where the miscounting took place] and did not explain in detail how the petitioner’s votes were miscounted for the Garuda Party,” Justice Guntur Hamzah said during the ruling hearing for the PPP’s petition in West Java.
The justice added that the party failed to explain whether the votes claimed to be miscounted in favor of Garuda were garnered by the party or its legislative candidates.
