Vice president-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka has pledged to back former East Java governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa and her former deputy Emil Elestianto Dardak, who are running for reelection in the regional head elections in November.

During his visit to Khofifah’s private residence in Surabaya, East Java, Gibran expressed his appreciation for her help in boosting support to secure his and Prabowo Subianto’s victory in the presidential election on Feb. 14, and also promised to return the favor.

“I thank her for fighting and [working hard for us]. The results were satisfying. It was extraordinary,” he said on Thursday, as quoted by state news agency Antara.

“And now it’s my turn to help Bu [Mrs.] Khofifah and Pak [Mr.] Emil Dardak to win the East Java regional election,” asserted Gibran, who is the incumbent Surakarta mayor.

Khofifah is a prominent Muslim figure in the province as chair of Muslimat NU, the women’s wing of the country’s largest Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). She temporarily stepped down from the post earlier this year to campaign for Prabowo and Gibran.

Home to 40 million people, East Java is the second-most populous province and NU’s traditional stronghold.

The Prabowo-Gibran presidential pair emerged victorious across the most populous island of Java, including a massive lead of more than 16 million votes in East Java.
