Pro-Prabowo parties signal support for Jokowi ally for Central Java race
Three political parties in president-elect Prabowo Subianto's camp have declared their support for Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Ahmad Luthfi to run for governor, potentially turning the regional election into another battle between the President and his former party, the PDI-P.

Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Ahmad Luthfi, a figure known for his ties with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, has gained the support of three parties aligned with president-elect Prabowo Subianto to run for governor of the province.
Should Luthfi decide to run in the upcoming regional election, it may be another occasion where Jokowi locks horns with his former party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), in its stronghold.
Among the parties eyeing Luthfi for the upcoming election are the Islam-based National Mandate Party (PAN), with chairman Zulkifli Hasan expressing the party’s interest in backing the police general in the Central Java race.
“Central Java will be Pak Luthfi’s job [to win]. I have my support for Pak Luthfi,” Zulkifli said on Monday when asked by reporters whom the party would back for governor of the province.
Luthfi’s name has also appeared on the list of prospective candidates for nomination by the Golkar Party, the country’s oldest party and the second-largest in legislature, alongside names such as Kendal regent Dico Ganinduto.
“We want to nominate a gubernatorial candidate who we believe will win. Pak Luthfi is one of them,” said Iqbal Wibisono, a Golkar executive in charge of regional elections in Central Java and Yogyakarta, on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.
