T

he Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the largest party in Jakarta, endorsed on Tuesday unsuccessful presidential candidate Anies Baswedan for another run in the November gubernatorial election in the city and named its former chairman Sohibul Iman as his running mate.

The decision was announced by PKS chairman Ahmad Syaikhu in a livestream on YouTube.

“The PKS Jakarta office has proposed Anies and Sohibul as governor and deputy governor candidates. After careful consideration, the party central board decided in a meeting on June 20 to accept the proposal and named them as our candidate pair,” Ahmad said on Tuesday.

Anies is unaffiliated with any political party. He was a popular Jakarta governor from 2017-2022 before running for president in February of this year on the ticket of the PKS, the NasDem Party and the National Awakening Party (PKB), but lost to Prabowo Subianto, who received tacit support from outgoing President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in the three-horse presidential election.

Despite being the largest party in Jakarta, the PKS must still form an alliance with other parties to be able to register a ticket with the General Elections Commission (KPU) in late August.

Previously on Sunday, PKS spokesperson Ahmad Mabruri reportedly said in an official statement that the party had named Sohibul as its Jakarta gubernatorial candidate instead. Mabruri at the time did not reveal who would be the candidate for deputy governor.
