arents have bemoaned problems surrounding the government’s zoning enrollment system for public schools, also known as PPDB Zonasi, which critics say will persist as long as the government fails to address the policy’s underlying issues.
Introduced in 2017, PPDB Zonasi was presented to ensure more equitable access to state schools and to eliminate so-called “favorite schools” by giving larger allocations of seats for students living nearby.
State elementary and secondary schools are required to allocate 70 percent and 50 percent of their yearly quotas, respectively, to pupils who take the PPDB Zonasi route.
An additional 15 percent of the available quota should also be allocated to students from lower income families through an admission route known as PPDB Afirmasi. Another 5 percent is allocated for students whose parents have been transferred to the area for work, with the remaining seats distributed for student admission based on academic performance.
To this end, enrollment for the next academic year is in full swing across the country. However, there have been concerns among parents regarding the implementation of PPDB Zonasi.
