The General Elections Commission (KPU) has said it will honor a recent Supreme Court ruling that alters the age requirements for candidates in the November regional elections, a move that has opened the door for President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s youngest son to run for governor.
The Supreme Court decision in late May ordered election rules to be revised to require gubernatorial and deputy gubernatorial candidates to be 30 years old at the time of their inauguration, rather than at the time their candidacy is made official.
The ruling paves the way for Kaesang, who does not turn 30 until December of this year, to follow in the footsteps of his older brother Gibran Rakabuming Raka, mayor of Surakarta, in running for regional office.
The KPU published on its official website on Tuesday an updated version of its regional election regulation, overturning a previous rule stipulating that candidates running for governor or deputy governor must be 30 by the time they are approved by the body to run.
The day before, KPU chairman Hasyim Asy’ari wrote in a statement that the commission had decided to modify the minimum age rules as a “legal consequence” of the Supreme Court ruling.
“Candidates for regent or mayor and deputy regent or deputy mayor must be 25 years old, and candidates for governor and deputy governor must be 30 years old [by the time they are inaugurated on] Jan. 1, 2025,” Hasyim said.
"The decision was made to give legal certainty regarding the age requirement.”
