Former West Java governor Ridwan Kamil and former Purwakarta regent Dedi Mulyadi have emerged as the top-two candidates in a latest public opinion survey for the upcoming West Java gubernatorial election in November, beating other names such as former Bogor mayor Bima Arya and former West Java deputy governor Dede Yusuf.
The race to win the Onward Indonesia Coalition’s (KIM) nomination for the West Java gubernatorial seat has accelerated, with the latest survey finding Ridwan Kamil of the Golkar Party and Dedi Mulyadi of the Gerindra Party rising as the top contenders in the province.
A survey by pollster Indikator Politik Indonesia, released on Thursday, showed Ridwan and Dedi emerging as the two top-of-mind candidates among respondents who were asked to name a figure they would vote for if the election was held today.
Ridwan, who served as West Java governor from 2018 to 2023, came out as top choice in the survey, with 16 percent of respondents preferring him over other figures. Trailing behind was Dedi, former regent of Purwakarta in the province who ran as the deputy governor candidate in the 2018 West Java gubernatorial election, with the support of 11.2 percent of interviewees.
For the survey, the pollster interviewed 1,214 respondents of voting age across West Java between June 20 and 27. The result has a 2.8 percent margin of error at a 95 percent confidence level.
The survey found Ridwan to be the top choice in a simulation featuring 12 potential candidates, with 44.5 percent of respondents favoring him. Dedi was in second position with 33.2 percent.
Nine other candidates presented in the 12-candidates simulation received less than 6 percent of the vote each, such as former West Java deputy governor Dede Yusuf of the Democratic Party, former Bogor mayor Bima Arya of the National Mandate Party (PAN) and Ilham Akbar Habibie, the eldest son of former president Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie.
