Indonesia Decides

Novice politician and Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) chair Kaesang Pangarep is leading in the latest public opinion poll for the November Central Java gubernatorial race, with many respondents favoring him because he is the son of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

Indonesians across the country will vote for their respective governors, mayors and regents simultaneously for the first time on Nov. 27, with political parties already taking stock of prospective names before formally registering their candidates in late August.

The survey released by Indikator Politik Indonesia on Sunday found that while many Central Java respondents are still undecided on who to vote for, Kaesang came out on top in almost all the survey’s simulations.

Central Java, the country’s third most populous province, is one of the most talked about provinces for the November elections because it is among the strategic regions that could be a springboard to the presidency.

In a simulation of 20 prospective candidates, Kaesang ranked first with 17.7 percent of respondents saying they would vote for him if the election were held today. Trailing behind him was Central Java police chief Insp. Gen. Ahmad Luthfi, Jokowi’s close ally, with 15.6 percent, and former Central Java deputy governor Taj Yasin Maimoen of the United Development Party (PPP) with 12.8 percent.

Below them were Bambang Wuryanto of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the largest party in Central Java which parted ways with Kaesang’s father Jokowi following the February presidential election, and Kendal regent Dico Ganinduto of the pro-Jokowi Golkar Party. Six percent of respondents favored Bambang and 5.6 percent favored Dico.
